Homework: Not so helpful, after all?

Comments

I like your point about potentially college-bound kids who cannot afford to be set further behind students at competitive private or suburban schools. I've been wondering how to frame the issue in order to successfully give these kinds of students the practice and brainwork outside of school that they need without seeming to unfairly overload them. Ideally, I would definitely assign such "honors" kids more homework, but it's tricky to get around the problem of assigning more or more challenging work to specific kids; the other kids feel left out whenever you allocate resources or attention to specific kids, and I'm not sure if that's something to fret over or something to just overlook as a necessary evil of the job. I'm still working that out.
